2 Decisive Measurements of Your School's Climate

Have you ever tried to measure something that is hard to form into words, such as a feeling or a thought? How do you measured an emotion, the success of a person, or the atmosphere or climate of your school?

When assessing the climate of your school, an important question to ask will be how to measure your school climate.

The general rules, according to Kevin Jennings and the US Department of Education's Safe and Drug Free Schools Program, is that in order to understand how safe and respectful your school is for all students, a school needs both behavioral data and perception data from both students and teachers.

Behavioral data includes disciplines, dropouts, tardiness, absences, etc.

Perception data comes from surveys, interviews, focus groups, writing samples, or art-based activities such as a young child's drawing of their playground, bus, or peer experiences.
