The US Department of Education's Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools (OSDFS) has proposed that each state find tools that it believes are valid and reliable measures of school climate. They offer a School Climate Model that they hope will guide those who develop school climate assessments.
The OSDFS's School Climate Model suggests there are three School Climate Domains: engagement, safety, and environment. Under each of these three domains the OSDFS suggests that there are several components.
Whatever data your school already collects under any of these domains would be worth reviewing as you decide what your school's strengths and weaknesses are in relation to school climate. If you don't currently use a survey, the SAFEMEASURES™ Survey can help you to collect data under these domains.
The SAFEMEASURES™ Process, with its strong emphasis on involving student leaders, utilizes student engagement as a powerful tool for addressing the other two domains (safety, and school environment).
Have a good week!
